The FIRST, FIRST LADY of her KIND!

It's as if an alien has landed in the White House for so many mainstream Americans. Or should I say "white folks"; they just can't wrap their heads around this woman who has lived the American Dream. How audacious of her to actually study and get good grades, attend an Ivy League School, graduate, complete Law School and become gainfully employed in her field while earning a comparable salary! WHo does she think she is? An American or something? IT make matters more interesting, she marries a bi-racial (Black) man who happens to be brilliant and driven as she and they pledge to support each others dreams while raising a family. Who do these people think they are? How in the world can America really handle this fine example of...AMERICA in its best behavior. To add salt to the obviously hypocritic wound, they land in the WHITE HOUSE as the FIRST African American President and First Lady! Mrs. Obama is not portly, elderly, or traditional in that she is fit, fabulous and in her forties. Michelle Obama has hugged the Queen of England, bared her arms(and a but of thigh) and has of late, vacationed in SPAIN all while the country is still in recession. What do we have to say about this. Well to be clear, I am an avid supporter of Mrs. Obama, and the First family. As a wife, mother, entrepreneur, entertainer, author and girls and women's advocate; I say continue to travel the road less traveled with your beautiful brown girls in tow. As you live and breathe, my three brown children are assured that they too can marry a princess and prince(s) who are intelligent,strong,dedicated and faithful and live happily ever after! It only makes sense that she expose her children and herself to all that this blessed office has to offer! To do anything less would be a disservice! Mrs. Obama, the greater the favor, the greater the HATER!

Am I a victim, HELL NO! But I am clear that one President, can't undo a history of bigotry and hatred and I just want to SLAP those who say this. Dr, Laura is below ignorant, she is an elitist, racist who hides behind her credentials and so-called straight-forward style! Please put her in the same column as IMUS, BECK and the rest!

From the White House to the Oldest African American Publishing Company...Desiree Rogers

I am so amazed at how one great moment with a HUGE glitch can lead to another GREAT opportunity with a lot of precursors. While Ms. Rogers has made history as the First African American White House Social Secretary, she also became the first to RESIGN this esteemed post after the now infamous "Uninvited Guest" fiasco! What dexterity she has to say the least, in light of all that she has experienced in such a short period of time. I am always in awe of the strength of women and even more of those whose ancestry bring its own baggage without provocation. So now she moves on to the oldest and larger publishing house owned and operated by African Americans the great Johnson Dynasty. Although Ms. Rogers has never worked in publishing, her business acumen has been lauded by Mrs Rice and the support is there. Johnson Rice has expressed that the Magazine and cosmetic line (Fashion Fair) have both been struggling as of late, and need to be revamped alongside the launching of the Web site in hopes of giving the brand an online presence. I will be a quiet observer (maybe not) and make a clear petition to "be a part of the solution"! Call me Desi...seriously, I would be honored and well equipped to write the FUNNY and all things Phenomenal about emerging womanhood, onto the cyber-pages of JET and EBONY!! Until we connect...

The truth about living and crossing over

I had the blessing of attending the home-going of Mama Francis M. Wilson Mitchell in the beautiful city of Chicago, IL on July 31, 2010. There were so many people that it was a standing room only and I was filled by the words and expressions of love that were shared. It only added to my belief that your life should speak the legacy that you leave. This woman so sweet and compassionate gave so much more than the cocktails that filled the hands of its many patrons for 45 years. She gave them a safe place to share their days work and a good game of cards. More than all of this, she shared a peice of her heart and for each peice she was given a mountain of love in return. I am so grateful that I was able to share in this glorious celebration and hope that everyone will make an investment in the life that you are given today to cash in when you need it the most!

Walking the Walk with the Children's Defense Fund and the Ellla Baker Policy Training Institute

I have never been humbled by a moment (outside of my trip to the White House and meeting President Barack Obama ) like I was on today Friday, June 11, 2010 when I was blessed to walk the grounds of the Alex Haley farm outside of Knoxville, TN. I walked the rooms of his home and sat in his writing room and wept! It was the enormity of what his writing has created that caused me to touch the wallof this room and take it all in! I stood in the library on the farm in the window that John Hope Franklin and Dr. Maya Angelou stood in front of while gazing at the lake! I was stunted in the moment as I reflected on the ancestors who walked those grounds and the legacy of Freedom Fighters who shared intimate moments with Mr. Haley! I can not thank you enough Children's Defense Fund for all that you gave me during my time with you! I will be uploading pictures soon!

101 Things Every Girl/Young Woman of Color Should Know

If I ever doubted the relevance for my first book, today confirmed its necessity! On the very day that the book arrived to my office three middle school African American girls walked by my office window, which is nestled between rows of homes; kicking the daily papers off of the steps of neighbors. I walked out to confront them in the nicest way, asking them why they needed to do this and two continued walking while one girl responded. She indicated that they were (in her opinion) just sitting in the middle of the walk way and she apologized. Sounds like a happy ending right? Wrong. As they neared the corner two them yelled "BITCH!! WHORE!!" and it was the reality that urged me to write the book; "101 Things Every Girl/Young Woman of Color Should Know" (Duafe Press 2010). This is the lighter side of the choices and behaviors of OUR girls and it gives me pause; not because it occurs, but the lack of communal and parental responsibility that manifests itself in the blatant disregard some of OUR girls show women who look like them. I chose Duafe; a West African Adinkra word which translates to "the highest feminine qualities and cleanliness"as the name of my self-publishing imprint; in hopes of creating content, both written and performance , that speaks to promoting and modeling its meaning . Chinese Checkers

While the rest of the average folks in America press to keep a roof over their heads, healthcare for their children and a decent meal on the table; government observers and pundits are clamoring over the DANCE that America does with CHINA! There seems to be growing concern over China's ability to keep us all at their manufacturing "feet". The hysteria rests in China's currency and its floating value which allows it to beat most economies to the "punch" and out-do us and others causing America to cut jobs and opt to import so many goods made in China!! it reminds me of trying to learn Chinese Checkers and Chinese Jump-Rope! Although I can't qualify if either of them exists; I will say that me and my front stoop friends attempted to conquer the "beast" on a number of occasions. The trickiest thing about the rope was that it was NOT a rope, but literally a set of large rubber bands that wrapped around two sets of opposing ankles leaving you with slightly clotted calves after a spell. And then the whole jumping in and out "thing" was more performance and science than mere hopping in and up and down as was the United States custom. Not to mention the whole geometric thing that came with Chinese Checkers! Hey maybe I'm on to something! CHINESE games were more MATH and SCIENCE, Empirical with research implications...yeah this was all a socialist, communist trick to get kids to jump through all kinds of HOOPS to mind control us all into believing that if it's MADE IN CHINA, it's BETTER!!! Wow talk about Jedi-mind-trickiest...seriously though; I'll bet that some lame conspiracy theorists is about to RUN off with this and start a whole DECONSTRUCTION research project in hopes of undermining the CHINESE government and return the United States of America to WORLD DOMINANCE!!! Da-Da-Da!!!!!!

Window Seat

All of the hoopla about Ms. Badu's latest video "Window Seat" is really concrete support for the very essence of the song! the " FEAR" of Evolution in people, organizations and life in general! If we could embrace the fact that we must "Change" or "Die" in some respect be it spiritually, emotionally or physically; than the uproar would cease! I am enamored with Erykah Badu's boldness and candor albeit slightly overexposed on the streets of DALLAS, TX . Her hometown has seen her grow in so many ways from school to stage and now they have a "birds-eye" view that was typically reserved for those brothers who she chose to intimately connect with. I must say that three babies later she is still beautiful inside and out! Continue to "free your mind' Ms. Badu and the rest will choose the role of voyeur!

I know my recent encounters have sensitized me so greatly, from meeting Stevie Wonder to the 44th President of the United States Of America, Barack Obama, I am clear that these are snapshots of greatness. My children in the WHITE HOUSE

GOD has a way of showing you glimpses of glory and our 8 year old daughter ushered us in! Yesterday, February 5, we were blessed to visit the White House in a private tour as a result of Hadiya being featured in the Washington Post on January 29, 2010 in the STYLE section. The reporter DeNeen Brown featured a story entitled " A Change in Attitude" which shared how kids were affected by Barack Obama becoming THE PRESIDENT of the United States. Hadiya shared that she was "happy to see little brown girls that look like me living in the White House." and that her Dad is "President of his own Company and her mom is named MESHELLE too and he is smart like Barack Obama and can be the President and move into the White House NEXT!!!" It was thrilling to read the article and the WHITE HOUSE called Sunday February 1, and invited Hadiya to the WHITE HOUSE for a visit on Friday, February 5, 2010!!! With the call for a BLIZZARD the plans were still in place!! We arrived at 2:20PM five minutes delayed and pressed to the NORTH EAST GATE of the WHITE HOUSE!! There we met security and the Ms. Daniela Gibbs Leger of the White House. Rushed in to meet the group of children featured in the article and their families, we began the tour of the WHITE HOUSE and were filled with excitement and wonder, as we toured the East Wing, Green and Blue rooms as well as the State Dining Hall and China Room we were told to put on our coats and head to the WEST WING!! WOW... this is were it all happens and we were told to leave our coats in the lobby and wait as our kids went ahead to the next room! We were told that the space was small and not big enoughfor us all!! So we patiently chatted in the lobby of the WEST WING and then we were ushered into the room where the PRESIDENT holds CABINET MEETINGS and were mystified. After what seemed like forever, we were told to join our kids and the door opens to the OVAL OFFICE and there surrounded by our kids was the 44th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES of AMERICA, Barack Obama and we were blown away!! The President urged us all to come in and he walked over to each of us and asked our names and shook our hands. My husband and Mr. President spoke of their Chicago roots and laughed about the East Coast's reaction to forecasted snow!! Our youngest daughter asked the President if she could have an apple and he said "That's what they are there for", and she grabbed one and our son , Mosiah-Sekou asked for one as well and began playing with it as he leaned on the coffee table. The kids also received Presidential M&M's with the Presidential Seal and his signature and Metal pendants with a raised picture of THE WHITE HOUSE and his Signature engraved. After wards, the kids were photographed with him and then we took a group photo!! THRILLING and awe inspiring!! Here my thoughts in summation:

"In one moment our children's lives were changed. Throughout the campaign, we carried them to the stumps to hear then candidate OBAMA and shared with them aloud that one day our worlds would somehow connect. Well it has and the WASHINGTON POST's follow up story shows HADIYA holding the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATE's Hand (Sameera beside her) and our son MOSIAH hanging out in the OVAL OFFICE. SPEAK LIFE and GRAND DREAMS to your children and yourself and watch GOD have them come to pass! Thank you MR. PRESIDENT"

And for Christmas this year Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards gave more than a partridge and a pear tree! I guess he wanted to give the gift that would STOP giving! Thus a potential "hot one" in his team mate Crittenton and it was not a JOKE!! I just don't get it, why go "so hard" and risk your life and the lives of others ? Is there a since of Superman invincibility when you revceive any kind of celebrity status? The same rules should and must apply to the average citizen if there are moments of exemption for celebs let it stand across the board! I am so curious to know how this will turn out and if he will continue his career in the NBA!! Just my thoughts!

The Baltimore 'WITCH HUNT" The Un-doing of Mayor Sheila Dixon

There is no other way to say it, "Witch Hunt" sums up the 4 plus year campaign to under mind and destroy History in the making, that being: the first "all-African-American Female" heads of City Government in Baltimore City, lead by Mayor Sheila Dixon. I had the pleasure of opening for the sold out Will Downing, KEM show on Friday, November 27, 2009 and sitting in the audience was our Mayor on a night on the town with her Beau, an innocent yet bold statement on behalf of the office of Mayor who during those hours fate laid in the hands of the holiday adjourned jurors. Days after a taxing highly publicized trial, Mayor Dixon's presence at the concert spoke volumes to the sentiment of life moving forward with or without a conviction. I am in awe some 4 days later she has been found guilty on 1 count of misappropriation of funds and stands convicted. All of this over nearly $1000.00 in gifts cards that were alleged to have been misused by the Mayor and exponentially more was spent on the trial than the $600.00 plus that were spent of the full amount! I am floored, stunned and dumbfounded that this was the bullet that pierced out First African American Female Mayor of our majority African American "Charm City". Where is Ashton Kutcher when you really need him, surely we are being "PUNKEd"! Yet the cameras have stopped running and there has been no change! After its all said and done, we will never know of the real felons and misdemeanors that have been committed by others who held this office, due in part to their gender and race and more than that ; the machines in place to cover their dirty tracks. I do not dismiss or condone any wrong doing on the part of the Mayor, yet after nearly 2 decades of service to this city, its seems shameful to insist on the final chapter of this season of her career to end in this manner! I smell a comeback of the most unique nature, one of which we have never witnessed and I plan to stand front and center when it happens. As a mom, my prayers are with her children!

Oprah Winfrey...The Right to Live!

Only a Narcissists would believe that after over 2 decades of daily appearances in the homes of millions; the networks could not survive without them. This is clearly the opposite of Ms. Oprah Winfrey, who has shown the grace of a novice and the expertise of a seasoned veteran often in the same broadcast. There are those who felt the floor drop when the announcement came that she would end her final season of the award winning OPRAH WINFREY SHOW in 2011. And yet I completely get it, there is a season for everything and Ms. Winfrey understands this on so many levels ; and ,is exercising the freedom to move fluidly to the next season of her divine assignment on this side of GLORY! If it means a hiatus from all things MEDIA, so be it, If it means some other unknown terrain to be explored by Ms. Winfrey, let it be!! I am so proud and humbled to have witnessed her career from my days as a elementary school student, to a post graduate, wife, mother of three and burgeoning Comedienne, from my hometown of Baltimore CIty to the WIndy City of Chicago, the silver screen and all points and continents between! I am sending all the best energy to Ms. Winfrey and hope to be a blessing to her some day real soon!

Why do some sista's speak so loudly?

I am not into making sweeping generalizations, people are much too complex for that, yet there is one observation that has reared its head on more than one occasion and I have witnessed it first hand. WHY DO SOME SISTA's (African-American Women) speak so loudly? Do we believe that masses of people are hearing impaired ? I am so stuck in that regard. I see some of the most beautiful women and get giddy on some "we are the most diversely gorgeous women in the world' and then they start talking!!! I just don't get it! Step away from the microphone, we heard you the first time! And I am just throwing this in there as a bonus, what's with the "potty-mouth? Somewhere inside of me, I remember feelng compelled to express my deepest passions in that vernacular, but it seems so passé, so long ago! I just want sista's to work a little harder at sharing their thoughts in a less offensive and combative manner. it sickens me, because at the end of it all, I am you and you are me, no matter how different we are, in these United States and abroad, I bare your burdens and I am tired of the stereotypical load! If this does not apply to you, great, if it does, "Eat the cake, Anna Mae" , and do the work to represent your BEST Self and I will gladly reap the benefits!

Sarah Palin "Going Rogue"

So the new book has barely hit the stands and she is a New York Times Best Seller! Are you kidding me? So if you can see Russia from your backyard and represent all that is pure about America and quit as the GOVERNOR you can sell books and parlay a one-time run for the Vice President of the United States of America to a talk show host (closed door buzz) than I am DONE with POLITICS!! At least the kind that gives value to a talking lollipop! I promise, if any credible woman of color were to have been in the same exact storyline, she would've LOST everything that she worked for, truly, if she preached abstinence and her daughter popped up pregnant and she quit her job, she would be seen as a failure! Oh to be WHITE in America and know how to hunt MOOSE!!

Pirates of Somalia and THE WIRE.

As a child I honestly believed that pirates had a patch over one eye, a hook for a hand, and uttered "ARRRG!" every few breathes, I wasn't real clear as to why any of this was the case, but I was convinced nevertheless. After the last few weeks of media infused depictions and reporting, I am stunned that the visual which held me captive for so many years has been refreshed with a slender AKA 47 yielding Somalian! My gosh, with out the gun, it looks like I could've "taken" one of those guys with a quick jab to the throat and spin lick to the GUT!! Strangely, the GUN made them look a lot tougher and the vass water made it all the more frightening. Yet what really startled me, was that this has been an ongoing issue on the sea and we "land-lubbers" are just getting a glimpse of the genuine horror of the life of a merchant seaman! Now, I find it hard to say "ARRG!" or "ahoy-there-Mate-es, walk -the-plank" Contrast, I spent the weekend with a group of visitors from London who were victims of the media as well. The genius if David Simon has reached the UK in the form of "The WIRE" and now we have to hit the "refresh" button again! This enchanting pair of sisters whose dominant intention was to gain a crash course in all things HOOD and Baltimore were slightly bewildered as they drove through beautiful CHARM CITY. Sure it has a festering sickness which has lingered since of the return of our servicemen from the Vietnam War in the guise of heroine addiction and an open air market liken to none other, so vividly depicted on HBO! The biggest shock for these civic minded media hostages was THE WIRE failed to show the clean streets, colossal Roland Park, Guilford, and Homeland community homes, the lovely tree-lined neighborhoods of Sequoia, Hanley Park, Northwood, Bolton Hill, Midtown, Mt Vernon, Mt. Washington, and The Alameda! Neither had it shown in full spectrum the gentrified East Harbor with it's specialty shops. organic market and high end condominiums. Before I knew it, I had to go in SEARCH of the microcosm that is "THE WIRE" and it was sickening , once there, all stomachs dropped! What is that? How is it possible that Charm City's polarities are so pronounced that it leaves you feeling "PUNK'd?" I am no idealist, but I smell a set up, a disparity so great that it'll make you turn to sleuthing to satisfy the gap between what you see and what you know! Or maybe someone needs to be held hostage until we can get results that level the playing field in the form of true drug rehabilitation and education as well as a city-wide sensibilty that sees the bastard child of Baltimore in the same lense as ANNIE and consciously commands the role of Daddy Warbucks!!!

Rants of an "Indie-Mom"

Since our President landed in the White House, the market has plummeted, family's have lost their homes and AIG has awarded 165 million dollars in bonuses! What is going on? Are we all getting "punked"? Somewhere between "Yes We Can" and " Oh no they didn't" this country has been turned upside down and nobody seems to be outraged! I mean really angry at the mess that didn't begin on President Obama's watch, but has been brewing for all of GWB's years in the White House. AIG or as I like to refer to them, ALL IGNORANT GANGSTA's has shown this country that the CLUB is truly exclusive and plans to stay that way. The only justification for the outrageous gross display of entitlement and greed, rest in knowing, the retention bonuses were approved in 2007. Blah...Blah...Blah. That's like saying, "The only reason why I keep eating is because the food just shows up!" I am so over these moronic hypocrites and capitalistic cat burglers. Where's SHAFT when you really need him to get rid of the bad guys? The only redemptive thing that GWB seems to have left in the White House is the BOWLING ALLEY! I'm rooting for the underdog in this game and he has a great jumper shot!! GO TEAM OBAMA!!
